![]() ![]() I know how much the successful navigation of my daily existence here in China depends on the various translation apps on my smartphone. Nor am I really suggesting we apply a blanket ban to drive google translate or any of these devices from our lives and schools. I do not advocate smashing the stocking frames of our connected classrooms. Is it just me? Am I a voice crying in the wilderness about this, or has anyone else out there come to question - nay, rather despise - the intrusion of the personal electronic translator (and all its various and nefarious online and iOS or android equivalent apps, the ubiquitous “google translate” phenomenon) in our ELL classrooms? So often teachers (and schools) turn a blind eye to out-of-control translator use, or simply throw up their hands in the defeatist refrain: “But they need them!” Avoid the temptation to so normalize or rationalize the problem.
